My Path to Immigration Law by Princess - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Attending college has been a long-term goal of mine. Seeing what a strong college education can do for someone, especially a young Black woman like myself, I have made it a priority. I aspire to become an Immigration Lawyer, inspired by the experiences of my immigrant family members who have faced struggles within this nation’s system. The chance to help those in need of a voice is deeply personal to me because I know what it’s like to feel unheard. I have always envisioned myself attending college, but there were moments of doubt. Financial barriers, the pressure of being a first-generation college student, and the fear of not knowing what to expect made me question if it was truly possible. However, I overcame these doubts by seeking guidance from mentors, staying focused on my long-term goals, and reminding myself of the stability and opportunities that a higher education can provide. My mother, who pursued her own educational journey despite immense challenges, has been my greatest source of inspiration. Attending a four-year university and graduating with honors is my goal—not only for myself but for the generations before me who lacked access to these opportunities. Higher education will give me the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and legal foundation necessary to advocate for immigrant communities.
