Second Chances by princess - August 2014 Scholarship Essay
I have had several memorable academic experiences while in school, but one in particular that stands out is my most recent experience. My last semester at Oakwood was spring 2006 and due to health issues because of my pregnancy, it was a very rough. I was unable to complete my semester and had to withdraw because I was put on bed rest. Although I had withdrawn and made the staff aware of the complications I was having, I still received grades and a bill for spring 2006.
I worked very hard to try and get this error corrected and to show good faith I continued to make payments on my bill. My ultimate goal was to return to school and I knew this had to be taken care of before I could return. Despite all my efforts I was not making any progress and continued to be rejected. Of course it affected me and made me feel like a failure and I almost lost hope and gave up, however, I did not.
While I was a student at the University I formed many friendships and business relationships with faculty and staff. It was a well known fact on campus that I was trying to get this issue corrected for 6 years but was not getting the help I needed. Fortunately for me, I had so many people encouraging me not to give up and I listened and continued to work on it.
I am now a mother of a six year old, second grade, daughter and a set of 17 month old twins, a boy and a girl. Having children put so many things in perspective for me. They are the reason I must complete my education so that I can increase my earning potential and set a good example for them. I have learned to take your failures in life and find your strength in them and allow those situations to make you stronger.
It is pertinent that I teach my children the importance of an education. Being a single parent, I have had many struggles and it took some mistakes and time for me to realize what is important. Thankfully, I have a second chance. Had I not received the run around and so many no's from the University, I might still be stuck. Every time I was told no and returned home and looked at my innocent children, I became more determined. The rejection I received gave me the drive to continue to fight for my education. After getting several no's, I finally received word that I would be able to settle my account and return to school.
This experience in itself taught me that anything in life worth having takes hard work and time. It gave me the strength to fight hard. Although I wanted to attend school long ago, it was not the right time. I had to learn patience and work hard. Not only will this help me in school, it has also helped me in my personal life. Despite the hard work to come, I look forward to this journey because I know the reward by far exceeds the work.
