The Adventures of Janie Crawford by Porsche - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
Books are assigned to high school students to help broaden their minds and teach them about different time periods and points of views. Every high school student, at least high school girls, should read Their Eyes Were Watching God. It’s an epic book that follows the life of Janie Crawford as she discovers herself.
Janie is a black, independent woman who ends up marrying three men as she travels around and enjoys life. Girls in high school should read this before they graduate because it is an empowering book that illustrates a woman who doesn't adhere to the constraints society has on women in that age in time. Janie also teaches girls to find someone who makes them happy instead of settling for wealth and/or comfort. Love is blind and is something that has to be worked for, not something that is owed or has a set of standards that everyone must follow.
The reason why this book is among my favorite books I've read in high school is because it is a book that empowers women, a book that teaches girls not to bow down to society or feel ashamed of the person they choose to love. It teaches girls to work hard in life and do things that makes them happy.
