As a Studio Arts Major.. by Pierce - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Take a moment to visualize a small sparkle tattoo parlor. Guests of all kinds are invited through its red doors. The exterior has large five-foot windows with neon lights, inviting guests of all kinds through its red door. A major in Studio Arts caters to my dream of becoming a tattoo artist. It supports my desire to spread art education to young artists on the West Side of San Antonio.

Tattooing doesn’t require a degree, but I would like to improve my visual language. In college, I have taken a variety of art classes. These range from sculpture to a class on the aesthetics of health. The variety in my classes, while not necessarily pertaining to tattooing, is transferable in how they have allowed me to become more diverse in how I make art. I’ve been a Studio Arts major for two years now and I can confidently say, my visual language has developed immensely. Especially when I consider I had hardly any art education in highschool. With the knowledge I have obtained, I also wish to support other young artists who are in the position I was once in.

Within my tattoo parlor, I wish to foster a safe space for visual language. I hope to educate young artists on the West Side of San Antonio about their own visual language. This can range from providing them with tools to having them participate in art contests and even helping them develop a portfolio. This comes from having to find these resources myself, while taking care of my grandparents and figuring out what I want to do with my life. I wish to become the art educator I never had and my Studio Arts degree will help me do so.

My dream to support myself and other young artists through visual language is critical, especially in the world we live in today. Expressing one's message through imagery can catch the attention of millions and people from the West Side have incredible messages. With this in mind, I chose Studio Arts to pursue my dreams and help others reach theirs.
