Honey by Phoebe - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

The honey was always on the rim of the crust, not the middle of the bread. At the age of six, my need for sugar in the early hours of the morning increased my rationalization skills. When I was young, my father had to go to work at six a.m., so I would wake up early because I wanted to spend time with him. He would always make toast with honey on it, and I always begged for him to pour more honey on it due to my six-year-old sugar habit. I never ate the crust; I thought the crust was disgusting, as many other young kids also believed. So my clever dad put the large amounts of honey along the outside, bordering the crust, and it didn’t take long for me to realize it. I was keen enough in the morning to catch his tricks when I excitedly ran around the hallway corner in the morning to receive my toast.
Since a young age, I have been a morning person. I have always risen earlier than the majority of my family, and in a familiar habit, I typically have more energy in the morning. The opportunities that lie ahead of me in the brand new day offer more clarity and excitement than a day that is coming to an end. There is a certain smell in the morning that smells like the trees are waking up and the light of the sunrise is buzzing, it makes me more elated than in any other time of day. When I discovered that the honey was on the outside of the crust more than the inside, I was in a dilemma. Luckily, in order to avoid eating the intolerable crust, I found a little trick. By slightly curving the corners of the bread upward while my father had his back turned, I spread the larger quantities of honey to the center of the bread. The morning has been a time for the most precise thinking in my life. It has been the time to be most mischievous, clever, and sharp. It is the time I feel most happy, therefore I strive most in the morning.
