Varsity Tutors Scholarship Essay by Philip - June 2015 Scholarship Essay

My name is Philip St.Cyr. I have graduated from East Ridge High School in Clermont, FL on May 29th. I am an incoming freshman to the University of Central Florida. I will begin classes in the fall and will major in Computer Engineering. I wish to apply and receive the Varsity Tutor Scholarship. I believe the money will help me to accomplish my goals.

Schools all over the country and even all over the world have different ways in assessing the aptitude of a student. In the United States the most common ways are though written test. The most common are versions of those are multiple choice, written responses, portfolio etc. In my opinion the most effective form is essay responses. When doing multiple choice, there is a possibility that a student will score well even when that student doesn’t have a full grasp of the material that he or she is being tested on. When presented a question with four answer choices, or even five answer choices, a student has a 20% to 25% of answering correctly without knowing the material whatsoever. To really assess a student’s grasp on a subject is to have them write an essay of what they have learned. With an essay, one can tell if a student knows what he or she is talking about based on how in depth their essay may be. I personally, have passed multiple choice tests where I didn’t really know the subject at all. If I didn’t know the subject while taking an essay test, I would definitely fail. This is why I think essays are the ideal form of assessment.
