Qualities of a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate by Philip - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

A Nobel Peace Prize Laureate must be a person who had "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses" (The Oxford Dictionary of Twentieth Century World History). Meaning that this recipient must have an understanding of peace, and focuses their work to better the world and everyone a part of it. Along with that, there are other key characteristics of a person that I would factor significantly into their character. I believe that not only should the recipient promote peace worldwide, but also have the intent for peace and not fame or fortune and consider their impact on the future. In total, the recipient should have a solid and sound character, that is selfless, humble, and also a forward thinker.
Firstly, the Laureate must be someone with strong moral values. This person should have any discriminatory biases to any certain group but be inclusive and open to foreign ideas, even if the person does not fully agree with the ideas. Along with being a strong moral person, the person should not focus on the fame and glory of the award but focus on expanding the knowledge or the specific discipline. To help elevate their field and better the current knowledge of the common good. The intent should be to pursue more knowledge and help advance all of humanity, then to gain personal glory.
Secondly, the Laureate must be an innovator. This person needs to push the bounds of the current paradigm. When the paradigm shifts, there are new possibilities of what can be done, usually resulting in new discoveries. Changing the current way of thought shows an initiative in pursuing new knowledge. This shows the character of someone, who has the desire and passion for their discipline, that they take their initiative to make themselves and their colleagues better.
In total, the Laureate must be not only a moral person but also an innovator. All of these also must be fueled by the desire for more knowledge, and ultimately a better world, than material gains and fame. This prestigious award is only for the prestigious people who want to be that change to have a better and peaceful world.
