If you could give one piece of advice to your past self, what would it be and why by Pharez - July 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I could give one piece of advice to my past self, It would be this : "Keep going, even when it hurts, because the struggle will shape you into someone powerful, compassionate, and unshakable." There were moments growing up in a single- parent household when it felt like the world was expecting too much from me, working two jobs, staying on top of school, helping to raise younger siblings, and trying to find a quiet space to chase dreams that often felt too big for the walls I lived in. But through all of that, I didn't realize how every hard day was preparing me for something greater. There were time I felt invisible, buried beneath expectations, or like my voice didn't matter. But now, looking back, I see how every moment I didn't give up, every long night studying, every shift at work, every time I stayed kind even when I felt empty, made me who I am today. That same grit helped me earn my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license while still in high school, secure acceptance to several universities, and step into leadership roles like being recognized as a top 5 Youth of the Year finalist. I would remind my past self that her dreams of becoming a nurse, helping others, and breaking generational barriers weren't just wishes, they were promises. And despite the struggles, God never left her side. My advice would be to trust the process, ask for help when you need it, and believe that your story matters. One day, all the pain you carried will become your power.
