10 years from now by Petra - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

My main goal is to be a large animal veterinarian. I have been dreaming of being a veterinarian since I was a child. I have grown up with horses, and have seen many ex- racehorses get put down due to injuries. I want to be able to help rehabilitate these horses instead of putting them down. In order to do this, I have created a plan for success. I will have complete my high school career at St. Paul VI Catholic high school. Then, I will have gone onto college at an undergraduate program. I will graduate high school in May 2025, this completes step one of my plan for success. Over my summer break, I am going to work on a dude ranch out west. This will give me hands-on experience with horses, cows, sheep, and other livestock. In addition to the experience, I will be saving money for college. Most dude ranches have food and board included in the pay. I will have almost no expenses during my time at the dude ranch. Currently, I also have two part time jobs. One at a restaurant where I am a food runner, I work around 2-3 times a week. I get paid $12 an hour. Once I finish four years at University, I will head to graduate school. For equine veterinarians, there are four years in graduate school. I am unsure of which graduate school I will attend. I am shooting for the stars, I will work towards getting into Cornell University for graduate school. However, I will continue to work to fund my education. Once I am finished with school, I will move back to the Northern VA area. I have been connecting with many equine veterinarians in this area. This will increase my chances of finding a job. After working for someone else for several years, I plan on opening my own practice. My practice will be targeted towards equine and large animals. I want to be able to help as many horses as possible, along with other large animals.
