Art of Expression by Perla - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
I am a single strand of yarn woven into the blanket of Latino heritage, where I am sewn between two distinct lands that mark my beginnings. My journey began in a land comprising of my ancestors’ empirical culture blooming with the vibrant traditions that outline my origins. As an individual raised in two different cultures, teaching our younger generation about the importance of diversity and advocating peace would be my one true message. Having grown up surrounded by influential artists and a passion for self-expression, I would greatly enjoy teaching an art class. What better way to demonstrate the true significance of art than by intertwining art with culture and teaching students about their history as diverse individuals.
I am greatly fond of art, I have a special connection to every line or shape i create with my paint and brush. An art class is the perfect environment in which I can not only learn from my own students, but also teach them different techniques that may allow them to develop their own unique style. Art is not a competition, and that is something I advocate in my daily life. There are those who are recognized for their artwork but there are others whose artwork is not defined by fame, but by the message they choose to portray. As an art professor I will pave the way for students to express who they are and define their own culture or background.
