In ten years, I'll be able to call myself a doctor with pride. My journey will have been shaped by dedication, learning, and growth. After completing a hematology-oncology residency, attending medical school, and earning a bachelor's degree in the sciences, I hope to work in pediatric oncology. My education will provide the knowledge, opportunities, and experiences I need to accomplish my goals.
This foundation will be built during my undergraduate years by taking part in initiatives like studying abroad in Spain or Latin America. Along with shadowing in medical facilities, I will gain practical experience in medical environments. By improving my Spanish language skills and expanding my knowledge of medicine, these immersive experiences will help me connect with a range of patients. Additionally, I will be better prepared for medical school by participating in programs like the trUE Scholars Program and the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URS), which will allow me to pursue my passion for medical research.
My academic studies will be crucial in enhancing my understanding of science. AP Biology and AP Psychology classes have already piqued my interest in the complex relationships between the body and brain. Continuing my undergraduate studies in biology and psychology will deepen my understanding of human anatomy, illnesses, and mental health—all essential in pediatric oncology. Additionally, I have gained practical experience handling medical supplies and equipment through my current enrollment in the Dual Credit Practicum in Health Science. Along with obtaining my Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) qualification, this program will provide me with the skills I need to work with patients and support them in clinical settings.
My life experiences outside of school will also help me develop as a future doctor. Working as a medical office clerk has allowed me to observe the behind-the-scenes operations that keep healthcare institutions running efficiently. Working as a pediatric oncologist will require me to collaborate with nurses, specialists, and families, and this role has taught me the value of cooperation, organization, and communication. My ability to build relationships and advocate for people in need has also been enhanced by my leadership as president of my HOSA chapter and my participation in groups like Student Council and community service committees.
I also want to make a difference outside of hospitals. Participating in outreach initiatives that offer medical treatment to marginalized people both domestically and abroad is my goal. As a Nigerian-American, I am dedicated to improving healthcare access for low-income families in areas with limited resources.
Following this path will be challenging, but my education will equip me to handle the difficulties that arise. My experiences in leadership, clinical practice, and research will provide me with the abilities and fortitude I need to succeed in my field.
I will wear my white coat with pride in ten years, knowing that every course, clinical rotation, and leadership opportunity has helped me become the doctor I was meant to be. My path will serve as a tribute to my perseverance as well as the invaluable support I received from mentors, teachers, and initiatives that shared my goal for a more diverse, inclusive future.
