Educated Athlete by Payton - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
Education has always been a big part of my life, but it is for every kid in the United States. They make us all go to school whether we want to or not. Some kids give up because they don’t want to be there and others actually try to succeed. Each and every kid, if they want to go to school or not, has one thing they love about school. For some it might be math or reading, and for others it might be playing sports or seeing their friends. I have been an athlete throughout high school. By playing sports, I have met some of my best friends and I have become close to many of my coaches. Sports have to be the aspect of my education that I am most thankful for.
Throughout high school, I have played almost every sport they offer for girls: basketball, cross country, softball, and track. While playing those sports, I met some of my best friends. These friends are part of the reason why I don’t mind coming to school; they make it less boring. Out of all the sports I've played in high school, I've only had three different coaches but one coach in particular has really pushed me. Coach Mays has been there to push me in sports and in school since the sixth grade. Without her, I don’t think I’d still be playing sports. She helped me in basketball by making me the best I can be. She has also helped me be the best I can be in the classroom by helping me with anything I don’t understand.
School work is just as important to me as sports. My parents have always pushed me to make straight A’s. They are the type of parents who want their children to excel, but they’ll still be proud of them even if they don’t, because they never did in school. My dad was an athlete in high school, so he knows what it’s like to try and balance making good grades, practice time, sleep, and social life all into one day. Even though he knows how challenging it is to balance all of those things together they still expect me to do good in both school and sports.
Every student has a something they love the most about their education. For some, it’s the academics, for some it’s athletics, and for others it’s seeing their friends. No matter who the student is they will find something or someone they are thankful for through their education. For me it is sports and the relationships I've made with people through them.
