Leadership in Students by Payton - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
I believe that leadership skills are one of the most important aspects to success- not only in college, but in the future lives of students. When students begin attending college, most of them realize that more is expected of them than in high school. Everyone in college is working towards the same goals: a degree and a job. In order for a student to successfully obtain both of these, they need to have leadership skills.
Unfortunately, college students are just another number to most professors. Students need to do something to earn the attention of professors, besides having good grades since so many students do. Professors will notice the students that are willing to go the extra mile and take on more responsibilities, which is just part of being a strong leader. By showing that they have what it takes to be leaders, students choose a good option of getting the professors' attention. Instead of remembering them for acting like idiots, professors will remember them for being someone that can be trusted with responsibility. Being memorable will help students receive recommendations and referrals from professors once they start looking for jobs or internships.
Also, college students are not just learning information and receiving an education, they are preparing themselves for the real world. In the real world, people need to have leadership skills or they will never be successful. Naturally, those who have a stronger leadership skills will be more successful in any career that they enter. By being strong leaders, they will be the first ones considered for promotions and they will be given more responsibility than the more timid employees. By learning how to be great leaders, college students are essentially learning how to be better workers. In my opinion, college is all about creating new and better workers. Colleges should stress the importance of leadership skills, since those are what make great workers.
In conclusion, being known as a leader can only help college students. Leadership skills will help them in pursuing their education, but also in their careers later on. Professors will remember students that shown leadership and responsibility. Future employers will also notice those skills in graduates and be more likely to give them promotions, since they can handle the responsibility.
