Calculus by payton - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

Throughout high school, I challenged myself by taking all honors and advanced placement classes. Although my classes were very difficult, I ended high school with a 4.1 GPA. I was looking forward to going to college to continue my academic career. I was placed in the easiest math class, and after sitting through the first day, I decided that this class would be way too easy for me. I contacted the dean of Assumption College and asked if I could be switched to the next highest math class, Calculus. In high school, I chose to take AP stats instead of pre-calc, so I knew that taking Calculus would be a challenge. I decided to make the switch because I wanted to challenge myself. After the first day of calculus, I knew that I was going to struggle. I left class and immediately went to the library to schedule a weekly tutoring appointment. I constantly met with my professor and went to tutoring appointments, but I was still struggling. When progress reports came out, my professor told me that he was impressed with my worth ethic and that he didn't think that I should drop the class. I was happy that my hard work was being noticed but still frustrated that my grade was not improving. Throughout the semester, I continued to go to tutoring appointments and meet with my professor, but my grade never improved. I ended the semester with a D+, the lowest grade that I have ever received in my life. This story doesn't have the typical happy ending that you might be expecting, but I wanted to demonstrate my strong work ethic, even when my hard work wasn't paying off. I'm sure that most people tell the story of how they worked hard and got the grades that they wanted, but that isn't the case. Hard work doesn't always pay off, but that doesn't stop me from working hard and persevering. This scholarship would help me so much. I am transferring from Assumption College for financial reasons. I am responsible for paying for most of college, and for all of the debt that I will have when I am done. This scholarship would be a huge help to me, and I'm very thankful for being considered.
