How Great of An English Teacher I Would Be by Payton - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed, and I were to teach an academic subject, I would for sure be an English teacher. English is by far the most outstanding subject as it allows for students to use their creative minds to create pieces of work. By saying that, the curriculum in my English class would require students to really dig deep into their thoughts to write about subjects they love, as well as subjects that aren’t necessarily their favorite. Being an English teacher, I would encourage students to use their creativity to the fullest extent, and my ultimate goal would be to help my students access a world of literature that they did not know existed.
To help teens get into this utopia of literature, I would assign writing assignments as writing is my favorite part of English. While high school students these days tend to struggle with writing, and the majority of teenagers do not like to write, I would start my writing assessments with topics that were very broad. This would ultimately allow writers of all types to pick and choose what they want their main focal point to be in their paper. For example, my eleventh grade English teacher assigned us a research paper on any argumentative topic. By doing this, she opened the door for our minds to run free and diverge into a world of writing in which we thoroughly enjoy. While, yes, students still tended to struggle with this, it did create a sense of excitement or joy in some who really were passionate about their topic. Once you have opened up this variety in the world of writing, you are allowing the student to find a sense of pride in what they write.
Overall, in order for anyone to be successful, you have to help them find a sense of joy in what they are doing. If they are enjoying it, then they will be a lot better at it. As a teacher, my main goal would be to try and find this sense of enjoyment in students, eventually helping them virtue into the magnificent world of writing.
