Studying Abroad and it's Benefits. by Patrick - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

“ The world is a Book, and those who don't travel only read one page” is a quote by St. Augustine on the subject of travel, and what better way to travel other than to study abroad. Having the ability to seek out new experiences while still young is a great opportunity that every student in a University should have to undertake. Having a mandatory study abroad program for every student is easily one of the best ways students in the United States, and moreover the world, can diversify themselves and set a new precedent for other students willing to earn a higher education.

Studying abroad has many advantages, from learning a new language, to traveling to an unknown culture, and it can be very beneficial to students who have only known one set of customs their whole life. Moving to another country for a semester, or however long, allows a person an in depth first person perspective of a new way of life and a whole new array of learning styles. Many students may even find a new side to a major and be better off knowing new information that would lead to a deeper love for a subject, or a change in fundamentals altogether. Leaving to another university, grants a student the possibility to learn all about a different culture in a once in a lifetime opportunity. For most, the prospect of moving to another country can be daunting, but if done while young and disciplined, a person can find new interests and even make life-long friends in the process of learning in a different environment.

When returning from a studying abroad adventure, students will have much more to offer in the realm of employment and of self-development. By leaving a familiar place and moving to foreign surroundings, a student upon return will have a much more vast variety of experiences and memories they can pull from to be able to shape the way they see the world and what they want to explore. Furthermore, moving into a career after college with a mixture of practices and understandings from all different sources, will give any employer a sigh of relief to see a fresh out of university scholar with a degree followed up by the real-world practice and involvement it takes in another country to learn skills and apply them to any job applicable.

Ultimately, the notion that students could one day be required to study abroad is more than acceptable and should be taken in with wide arms. As it obliges the next generation of smart-thinkers to not only learn more and take in a new culture, but also to recognize that traveling to another society with no attachments is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity that can only bring amazing results.
