Life is an Open Door by Patricia - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
Succeeding is not about the amount you earn or the amount of validation you get from society. I believe that the true meaning of success is doing anything that satisfies your well being. Having the drive to find opportunities and taking them is showing that you’re willing helping to improve your success. Accomplishing something is not only an action but also a feeling of satisfaction. With that in mind, I strongly believe that college is the best place to start in order to be prepared for the world throws at you and as well as getting my dream job
You may have heard the saying, “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” If I had one word to describe college, it would be the word, opportunity. To me, entering through open doors was something I took for granted until senior year of high school. Being as honest as I am, I personally don’t think I’m a hardworking, academically intelligent person. Ever since I was a child, my parents set standards for my brother and I; constantly telling us that we need to do our best in everything -especially in academics- in order to go to college and be successful.
Having my parents expectant of those standards to stick onto my actions then came my downfalls. My priorities kept piling up which resulted in my purpose in life feeling so out of place that I started to doubt my dream of becoming a pediatric nurse. The overwhelming feeling I had experienced felt like water filling up non-stop over me that left me from drowning in my worries about the future. As senior year came through, my perspective on my life began to change when I learned from life not to ignore open doors. Grades on my transcript may say I’m eligible to graduate high school this year, but in actuality, I always felt that I could’ve done better for myself.
For the past three years, my teachers and my family members have told me to stop worrying about later and start acting now. Although I’ve gotten numerous opportunities to take great advice, I still had a negative mindset of uncertainty for my future on whether or not I’ll be able to achieve my goals. Now as I begin to soon enter into the world of college, I see it as a brand new place to finally do the thing I’ve rarely done throughout my high school experience; to continuously have the drive to searching and taking those opportunities instead of waiting for them to come at you. Having the ability to tell myself to be bold in making decisions has taken a while for me to get to but I’m grateful that I’ve learned from my family and peers that life is truly an open door that you should not wait on. I believe that a college is a place that will allow me to find opportunities that I hope will eventually fulfill my well being. Here’s to more open doors!
