A Memoir To Medicine by Patrice - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
All my life, the topic of science has interested me. After completing my first anatomy class last year, I knew I wanted to learn more about how the body functions. I remember the first real dissection in that class, a sheep brain. At first, I was hesitant to do it, not because it was a brain, but rather the complexity of it. It was a final exam and I remember staying up all night trying to study all the parts of the brain. I made flashcards, reviewed notes, and searched every quizlet I could. I knew I did not need to memorize every detail but, I kept getting enthralled with how something so relativity small could hold so much power and detail. This was the fuel to my interest in medicine. Last spring, I had the opportunity to visit a cadaver lab at a local college. I had this overwhelming feeling of joy and eagerness to learn more about the human body. After leaving, I knew I wanted to practice medicine for the rest of my life.
My future goal is to become a successful Physician assistant specializing in children. Working with children comes with building memorable relationships with the families forever. I want to be the reason a family finds comfort and answers in a time of uncertainty. The job itself offers versatility and constant learning daily. I would love the opportunity to assist a doctor daily on different cases. I also want to become a Physician assistant because I rarely see women who look like me in the medical field. As a black woman who wants to practice medicine, I want to inspire the next generation of young scientists. Anyone can pick up a scalpel, but truly wanting to change people's lives for good is different. I want to give back to the community through medicine. Medicine is a magical thing that can bring many people together. The journey will be difficult, and there will be times when I want to give up, but being able to change people's lives through medicine truly outweighs the hardships.
