Education is Passion by Paige - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The gathering of knowledge is a practice that dates back to the earliest times of human history. For centuries, humans have discovered a need to gain the knowledge of the world around them. They yearn to discover new species, new elements, new theories of math and science, all in attempts to make the world around them more comprehensible or easier in some way. They pose questions to answers they don’t know the answers to and then go out into the world and search for them. In every human being, there is a need for quest and for assurance. For some, the assurance and quest they thirst for is quite different than the same assurance and quest that another thirsts for. But, underneath the surface, everyone has a set of answers they spend their whole lives trying to solve.
Education has a different meaning to many; and it is a tool in which many great discoveries have been added to our world. Education takes on many shapes and sizes, and can be arranged to fit all areas of interests. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was one of the world’s greatest leaders at his time. He was a strong advocate for the Civil Right Movement, but he was also a Minister and a kind humanitarian. He used education in the form of speeches and voice to bring about a change in the world. By speaking to the public about the Civil Rights, he educated them on the beliefs of those involved with the Movement, as well as how the other side was being treated. His speeches would gain world-wide attention, and they would eventually be the cause of his assignation in 1968. Education can be a hard object to handle; this is a reason for the saying “knowledge is power”.
Marie Curie was another famous role model who took on another meaning of ‘education’. She was a chemist and physicist whose research led to miraculous breakthroughs in the subjects of her fields. Her discoveries on radiation would lead to revolutions in the medicinal world. To her, education was simply a passion of hers. She loved what she did, and she couldn't get enough of it. By performing numerous experiments in the hopes of expanding her ever-growing thirst for knowledge, she also gave way to astonishing findings in the world of medicine that were used to help save thousands of lives.
There is a correlation between why I chose to write about Martin Luther King Jr. and Marie Curie. The way they took on education was so eloquent and produced wonderful results. Education should be a passion; it should be an ever-growing desire that burns and aches in one’s soul. It should never be quenched, never be satisfied because the world is full of knowledge. The world is full of discoveries that haven’t been made yet, of solutions to problems that haven’t even been thought of yet. It is a vast collection at the tip of everyone’s fingers, and it’s just waiting to be released. Through the passion of knowledge, lives can be saved. Lives can be saved both literally and figuratively. By making medicinal advances, one can save millions of lives. Also, however, by bringing about change through the education of social injustices and other flaws in our society, you can also save millions of lives. Education is a tool with which to effect change in our society; to make our lives easier and better. It a passion of mine, and it is never satisfied.
