My Journey to Choosing Nursing: A Personal Reflection by Paige - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Choosing a major is a pivotal decision that shapes one’s academic journey and future career path. My decision to pursue nursing was influenced by personal experiences that ignited my passion and curiosity.
Initially, I wanted to pursue dermatology at a very young age. Since then, I have immersed myself in the world of healthcare, trying to learn everything I can about the human body. I would always be so excited to go to any doctor's office because I would ask them questions about their profession and get to see them in action. I even bought an anatomy book when I was 13 years old and began learning all body components. This passion has lasted since then. However, my aspiration to go to medical school for dermatology didn’t last for too long. I quickly changed my decision once I realized it was more than just looking at people's skin.
Once I got to high school, I had many more opportunities to find my dream profession. In my freshman year, I took an introductory health science class, which opened the door to different medical careers besides doctors. During my sophomore year, I took sports medicine and medical terminology classes. These 2 were pivotal moments because I learned about various diseases, anatomy, treatments, and all different professions. I was still unsure what to do at this point, but I kept going in the healthcare route. At the end of my sophomore year, I took a leap of faith and applied to a CNA program at my school. I had never considered nursing before, but I thought, why not? I knew I would learn much but didn’t think I’d learn my dream career.
My first day of clinicals was the most exciting but also nervous day of my life. I had practiced on the mannequins for five months and knew I was as prepared as possible. Meeting all the residents at my local nursing home was like nothing I’d ever done before. Each room was a completely difference experience with unique tasks and residents. However, no matter who it was, I knew I had to give them the best care possible. Although the functions were not always pretty, the feeling after performing was rewarding and made my day. Seeing the residents smile and feel better made me forget what I had just done. The few weeks I was in clinical flew by, and I was so sad to leave all the residents I had formed a relationship with.
I am eternally grateful for making the decision to apply for this program. Without it, I would have no idea I wanted to pursue nursing. I am excited and ready to embark on this academic journey and hope to contribute to the field. I am now a certified CNA, which is the beginning of my adventure. I hope to help and care for many more patients and make a difference.
