Entering high school can be very frightening and new for incoming freshman. Luckily for me I was guided by my older sister and it was far less challenging for me compared to others who were also freshman. As a freshman, there are new challenges and harder course you go through; it is the beginning stage of becoming an adult and having to be open minded with the classes you select. While being in my third year of high school I have learned different ways to balance and maintain my classes with other clubs and sports. By leading a group of incoming freshman my piece of advice for them is for them to know that while doing both sports and clubs and maintaining your classes with a good GPA it is important to focus on your studies more than your sports. Meaning school is first and your sport second.
As an incoming fresh it is important to choose your classes wisely. By joining AP and Honors courses you have a boost for you GPA and it looks good on college applications. With AP and honor classes it helps you develop college level academic skills. Advanced classes as such are challenging and rigorous, and it gives you a better preparation for college. Personally I think if you are serious about your education and are interested in taking such high courses to take them with no hesitation. My suggestion, do not take an overload of what you cannot handle or take on. Being in an AP or honors class it is quick to fall behind if you’re not continuously doing your homework and paying attention. From personal experience in taking AP classes it allows you to get a better one on one education. My advice for freshman is to open up your options and don’t take the easy way out when you can go on the harder path for an easier future in the long run.
When doing sports it is important to keep in mind that you are a scholar first and an athlete second. With that being said joining sports is a good opportunity to get involved. It would be preferred to take an athletic period for your sport during 6th period so you are not missing out on your important classes. Keep in mind that when you do sports, you leave your classes earlier, it can be during the day or towards the end of the school day. My advice for this particular topic is to make sure you can juggle multiple takes at a time, and you’re able to multitask your school work the athletics.
High school is far more different that middle school, not only is it a bigger school and different school hours but the classes are far more important and harder. It’s not like you can fail a class in high school if you fail a class you have to make it to receive all you credits. If you don’t have all your credits you won’t be able to graduate on time and would have to graduate during summer. If there is any possible way you can get ahead in classes take the opportunity to do it. It’ll give you the benefit in the end.
However, some of the advice I’ve given isn’t going to be useful for everyone. People do things their own way and know what’s best for them. Although the advice that I spoke about can be very helpful for other incoming students, who aren’t quite sure what they want or how to proceed in taking their classes or what classes are best to take. When being given that advice you can get a better understanding of what to take or if you should join clubs and sports. As it was said in the beginning, only take what you know you can handle not what you want to take. If you want to take five AP classes but you know that the work is going to stress you and then don’t take it, instead take three AP classes that you can invest more time into one another rather than just completing nonsense.
