Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon by Oyinkan - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I volunteered to work in the children’s ministry at my church, my love for children grew bigger than I could ever imagine. This led to my interest in becoming a pediatrician. Since children are unable to help themselves, I would be delighted to help them medically. I would help children understand their medical needs, explain the anatomy of their sickness, and comfort them. I have always been a compassionate person, so wanting to tend the sick comes natural to me.

In biology class, I enjoyed learning about the process of life. It gave me a thorough understanding of the existence of life and how it works. I love learning, and I love how the scientific field is constantly advancing. I would love to dedicate my time in college to further expand my knowledge of health science. I find human anatomy extremely fascinating and captivating. For that reason, I plan on majoring in biology while pursuing pre-medicine in college. In addition to majoring in biology, I will need to study chemistry. I am not too fond of chemistry, but majoring in biology will encourage me to work harder so I can get better at understanding biochemistry. In college, I plan on joining clubs that support and guide students who are pursuing careers in healthcare. This will equip me with the necessary knowledge and experience to thrive in the medical field. Aside from my interest in biology, I enjoy helping others because it gives me a feeling of purpose. Becoming a pediatrician is the ideal combination of my love for children, science, and helping others.

After I earn my bachelor’s degree from college, I will take the MCAT. Throughout college, I plan on gaining professional experience by applying for internships and shadowing pediatricians, so I can get hands on experience and prepare for the MCAT. Depending on my results, I hope to attend Emory Medical School. After graduating from medical school with a doctorates degree, I plan to: earn my medical license, complete my residency training in pediatrics, and become a board certified pediatrician.

After I establish my career as a pediatrician, I want to give back to my community by opening a private medical practice in a medically underserved community. I passionately believe everyone should have access to good healthcare regardless of their socioeconomic status. I grew up in a single parent household, therefore I was denied many things due to our financial situation. I do not want children to experience what I went through. For that reason, I plan to work with families and children who would otherwise not receive quality healthcare. I aspire to attend a college that has exceptional medical programs that can help me accomplish these goals. I want to be a part of a diverse community where I can impact the medical field and advance in my desired career as a pediatrician.

Setting short-term and long-term goals gives my life direction and keeps me motivated. My ultimate goal in life is to give back to others. In the future, I plan on establishing a non-profit charity for impoverished children. Through this, I hope to positively impact many lives. Going into the field of pediatrics, I not only want to heal children physically, but also heal their mental wounds. Making a difference in children's lives is important to me because, what they experience at a young age will affect them forever. Yes, I aspire to be a phenomenal pediatrician, but if I am not eager to get up every morning and help change a child's life, then I have not accomplished my goals.
While I am studying in college and establishing my career, I want to learn everything I possibly can about medicine and be a part of many outreach programs that help children. I want to work in a hospital where I am surrounded by driven colleagues, kick butt, and save lives. While my love for medicine will grow, I want to have a meaningful life outside of it as well. I don’t want to miss out on life’s greatest moments by chasing a bigger paycheck and trying to obsessively obtain a higher medical rank.

When you need to be successful just as bad as you need to breathe, you will not quit. Anything I want in this lifetime, will not come easy, but it will be attainable. Money is a luxury, but it is not all I seek in life. For that reason, I work hard everyday to ensure acceptance into a good college. The various resources and opportunities college offers can help me gain insight into the pediatric field and achieve my career goals. In college, I hope to gain valuable life and work experience. I want to be around intelligent, gifted students who have big ambitions in life. I want to push myself, discover my academic capabilities, and develop into the best me possible.
