My Father by Owen - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was born my father has helped me do things. He has taught me how to do many things around the farm. He has always helped me when I needed it and he still helps me when he can. Now that I'm getting older, I can help him do some things too. When I'm not in school, I am usually at the shop helping my dad with what I can, I enjoy it, and I like getting my hands dirty and doing hard work. I help him fix all different kinds of vehicles. I recently started working on my grandpa’s old chevy truck. I want to have it to drive to school. My dad told me what needed fixed and he helped me get the parts. I needed to install them. I installed what I could with what he taught me and I got most of the parts put in. For the things that I didn’t know how to do, he taught me how and I learned how to do them. I got the truck running and it works well. All I need now is to put new headlights in and I should be good to drive it to school.
I also like helping my dad with the cattle and he taught me how to drive tractors, and how to take care of cows. For chores, we load a wagon with silage with a tractor and loader. We have another tractor for the wagon and we drive that tractor in the cattle yards to feed the cattle. Then we have to make bottles for the calves with no mothers. Then we check the cows every so often to see if they had a calf. I used to not know how to do this, but now I know how after doing it with my dad for a while, then I did it by myself and did a good job, and now he lets me do some of it by myself. After I graduate I want to be a cattle farmer and a diesel mechanic, just like my dad, and my grandpa. My dad works with my grandpa, so I help both of them with things, but I usually help my dad more.
