The Image of Mr. Pau-Llosa by Oscar - March 2013 Scholarship Essay
Cuban-American poet, art critic and English professor of Miami Dade College has been probably the most influencial one not only for me but for most people. A guy who speaks, describes and has a lot to say about himself because of his personality, difficult to understand. Most of his Essay questions and class material for an ENC1101 level was just not apropiate for my parents and grandparents when I used to ask them for help when writing them. Questions that according to them, where for advanced psychology majors. Going back to 2007 when I first started taking his class with over 40 students aproximately and ending at the end with just 5 of which among them I was one of the luckiest one to survive ending up with a 'B'. At first, this professor sounded very much to almost everyone like somebody who had lots of mental, or trauma problems when talking about how he got into the states when growing up and how he had to survive the Castro's regime at the time he was just a boy. Then later on getting into art, which has been his passion along with poetry where he gets pretty analitical and with all due respect, somewhat pervert to my opinion. And the reason why I say this, is because of the art at what he likes to interpret on his writing, where the art he is into is a type of art he describes as 'not for kids' due to sexual and violence content along with abstract style. I found this strange when I got to know him better by telling him that my granfather was an artist and so therefore he was interested on looking at his paintings so I went ahead and sent him pictures of my grandfathers paintings. He loved the abstracts in particular but not the ones with the birds, the trees and the rivers which was what my grandfather used to paint most of the time. Me and my professor became friends while attending to his art galleries where he used to present and show me these pictures and strange argentinian artists who to my taste were pretty liberal. Then little by little, I got to know the proffesor extremelly well and what I found on The Image of Mr. Pau-Llosa was quite different. A super liberal personality along with protestant conservatism when it comes to politics and government. He believes in freedom and government to the minimum power always on the republican side but a very strong liberal personality on how he lives as an art critic, poet, English teacher and as a friend. A brilliant mind in my opinion at what he does, and how psychologicaly and profesionally treats people but sadly, lacking faith on who created him which is the ONE who is stronger than all. Despite the fact that people reach up maximum knowledge on academics, job positions, etc....humans will always feel empty and lonely on their inside when they do not know who they have to follow and believe in. My professor was one of those, a great man who I respect and very influential by showing me taste of intellectual culture, menss behavior and passion for art. To this day I disagree with his ideas due to the fact that I am now a Man of Faith, but still once again very influential because it was a first time I hang out with a professor who not only taught me a lot of advanced psychological behavior but who was one of the werdiest fellows I have ever met.
