I walked down the long empty hall as I approached the principal’s office, the proposal form in my hand. I felt myself shaking in nervousness as I thought of asking her for permission on this new club I wanted to start. What if she said no? What if she thinks it’s a stupid idea? My heart was pounding while my mind was racing. I knocked on the door, Mrs. Gonzales allowed me in and said she wasn’t busy. I walked up to her feeling like I was walking in slow motion. She asked, “Hi, how are you?” For a second my mouth couldn’t move, but eventually, I said I was doing great. I handed her the proposal form and said, “This might be a dumb idea but I thought it would be really cool in this school if we had a film club. I’m really passionate about filmmaking, but I would love to show other students how amazing it is.” Instantly I let out a sigh of relief, now I just had to wait for her response. She frowned at me then looked down at my paper, my fists clenched in anticipation for the worst, but she let out a smile, “I think it would be an amazing idea, however, what would the club members do? How would you be engaged in our school community? A million ideas raced through my head, ones I had been thinking of ever since I wanted to start this club. I rambled on about how I wanted students to be able to create their own films while letting their imaginations run wild. I would teach them all about directing, cinematography as well as editing. At the end of each semester, we would hold a film festival showing the whole school our creativity. “This will NOT be a boring club, where we just stand around and do nothing, I’ll make sure students get something out of it.” The principal nodded her head, reached into her cabinet and pulled out her stamp of approval. I walked out of her office with high confidence that this club would be amazing, I would make sure of it.
