I will be attending the University of Texas at Dallas in the fall of 2023, and I intend to major in Bachelor of Science accounting. There are a multitude of reasons why I chose this major some would consider unconventional for a teenager. But the most prominent set of these reasons would be the fulfillment of my job, My interest in learning the fluctuation of taxation policies, and helping my family and community make the most informed tax decisions.
Many people major in popular majors known for their uniqueness and find accounting non-beneficial, but I see the opposite. Seniors who’ve gone ahead have informed me about the nature of this major, accounting is a major where coasting through will bring one no success, rather one must be determined to make full use of the education this major brings in order to develop as an individual and learn the ways of our tax system.
Some may wonder what it means for a job in accounting to be fulfilling as some would consider working at a hospital to be more fulfilling. I wondered as well, but I have come to the conclusion that a job known for its flexibility in work hours, which involves the art of helping everyday people save money and inform them on ways to be in favor of government tax policies; is not only fulfilling, but it presents a change in a situation every day I work as an accountant. But on a more personal level, I have experienced what it feels like to have no clue about a system as large as the tax policy in the United States as my parents had to make countless inquiries in order to get on track. I hope to make this process much easier and affordable for people.
Secondly Majoring in accounting will ensure I will be in a field where education is eternal, as an accountant is required to renew their CPA certification every three years, despite me being a high schooler who should probably dislike learning more, I find amassing new information and education to be key in staying afloat in today’s world. Lastly, I hope to use my job as an accountant to propel myself into becoming a taxation specialist in the law sector.
