My greatest achievement during my education by Oluwaferanmi - August 2023 Scholarship Essay
When I think about my greatest achievement during my education, attending the Fernbank student program during my freshman year takes the spotlight. The experience not only fostered my curiosity about various aspects of science but laid the foundation for my decision to be a medical doctor. The countless workshops and trips equipped me with invaluable skills crucial for my future journey in medicine.
As I stepped into the doors of Fernbank science center, a sense of curiosity enveloped me. My first classroom rotation was a microbiology class. It included learning about plant microbiology and then having workshops that included studying plants under a microscope. As I peered through the lens, a whole new universe came into focus, it revealed fascinating things that I never imagined. The workshop sparked my curiosity about microscopic plants.
My second class rotation included me learning about meteorology. Our instructor informed us about weather, climate, weather pattern, and atmospheric conditions. Learning about this gave me a whole new perspective on the science behind weather. What made it more interesting was the fun activities that we did to better understand the information. After the class ended, I had a deeper understanding of the weather.
As I transitioned into my third rotation, I was met with hundreds of different bird species surrounding the classroom. I was mesmerized by each unique look and characteristic they all had. We were all taught about the different bird species. We were privileged to go on an excursion to identify different bird species. We ventured into the woods and I was able to experience birdwatching firsthand. I was able to identify about ten different bird species and jotted them down on the paper I received. We returned to the classroom and received a quiz on fifty different bird species. The entire experience nurtured my appreciation of nature and made me feel more connected to it.
My fourth rotation was an engineering class. I had the opportunity to work with robots and programmed codes for the robots to follow. At first, I was struggling with coding to make the robot move but after a while I got it. Once I got the hang of it, I created a whole sort of robotic movement. Being able to code and make the robots perform different actions brought me a strong sense of achievement in me and made me feel more confident about working with technology.
Last but not least, my favorite rotation was human anatomy and physiology. Our instructor started teaching us about the structure and function of the human body. We later transitioned into observing a female human skeleton while discussing it. What made this my favorite rotation was the animal dissection that we conducted. We first started by learning about their anatomy and its function. We then proceeded into dissecting a pig's heart while being split into groups. This helps deepen my understanding of various chambers, valves, and blood circulation pathways. Our second dissection included a sheep eye and we discussed various components that make up the sheep eye. Overall, the dissection enhanced my understanding of anatomy and physiology and the opportunity to engage directly with anatomy gave me a sense of awe.
Looking back at my experience in the Fernbank student program, it was seriously the best. Each part of the experience was amazing. Learning about plants, weather, bird species, robotics, and human anatomy and physiology was remarkable and noteworthy. Seeing microscopic things and learning about complex details about human and animal anatomy strengthened my decision to pursue a career in medicine. Filled with knowledge and cherished memory, I am ready to embark on the next chapter of my life.
