My Road To Success by Oluwadarasimi - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

My name is Darasimi Jakande, and I am an incoming transfer student to Georgia Tech. I transferred from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. My major is chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Being a transfer student in junior year can be difficult -even more difficult than being a freshman. The past few days I have spent on Georgia Tech's campus have shown me that I would have to work very hard to fit in to this new community. Nevertheless, I am very excited for what Georgia Tech has to offer and I am excited to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people!

Though I don’t start classes until next week, I have been told by current students that Georgia Tech is a very difficult school academically. As I start this new journey at Georgia Tech, an academic goal I have for the upcoming year is to "progress and succeed". Academic success for me includes achieving a GPA within the range of 3.4-4.0 and maintaining this GPA by being consistent with my study habits. I also want to get into Georgia Tech’s study and work abroad program with a full-ride scholarship.

To achieve my goal, I will participate in Georgia Tech's mentorship program (Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program (P2P)) and I will try my best to attend every session. As a first step, I signed up to be a mentee in the program last week. Participation in P2P will help me achieve these goals because I will be provided with support and guidance from individuals who have experience in my field of study. This means they will be able to provide me with the knowledge on how to study for my courses, extra resources available to boost my academic performance, and study groups to join. This will help me reach my goal of achieving and maintaining a high GPA. P2P also has student ambassadors from Georgia Tech's study and work abroad program. I aim to network with a student ambassador and get some information and guidance on how to join the program.

While P2P will provide individuals to guide me in my success, a huge portion of my success depends on me. I am determined to work hard, ask for help, go to office hours, and do whatever it takes to achieve my goals for this school year.
