The Importance of Auto Mechanics
Hi, my name is Olivia, and I’m enrolled in Chester County High School and taking part in the middle college program through Jackson State Community College. For the past few years my passion for cars has grown a lot and so has my knowledge. I have learned from the internet, my father, and even just by digging around in old engines. I plan on working in the engineering field, specifically the mechanical aspect. I believe that the auto mechanics elective class should be a required class so that students will develop a bigger understanding on their vehicle’s health and save money later in life.
Taking the auto mechanics class would provide students with the understanding of how their engines work; therefore, knowing how to resolve an issue if they ever have car trouble. With this knowledge students are able to be independent and fix problems themselves that could potentially cost them thousands if they never took the class. Most of the money people pay at a shop for their car goes towards the labor cost and not the actual broken part. For example, if someone blew a head gasket one day, depending on what kind, they could buy a new head gasket for around $100 and use the knowledge that they learned from the class to replace the gasket themselves; therefore, saving thousands of dollars. With this saved up money, students can prioritize other necessities like housing, bills, insurance, and other payments later in life. If students used what they learned from the auto class, they could be independent and save a ton of money with the absence of labor costs.
Being skilled or at least having an understanding of engines and vehicles is important in today’s world. For most people their personal vehicle is their main mode of transportation. Well, knowing when your engine is having issues and how to fix them is crucial. For example, if no one is around to help you if your engine is messed up, at least you have an understanding of what is wrong and how to resolve it. It’s important to know what kind of engine you have and what certain parts are. If you need to repair something in your engine most parts are specialized to certain engines, so you should know what part you need for what engine. And let’s be real, there are rarely any mechanics or body shop owners that are tight on money. Additionally, the field of auto mechanics, whether it being engineers or small town mechanics, is always going and if students are skilled in this field they always have the opportunity to get a job in this field and live comfortably.
Learning about vehicles shouldn’t be just for the country boys, it should be required for everyone. One day everyone is going to run into car trouble, and it would be in their best interest to have an understanding on how to resolve the situation. The auto mechanics shop can provide knowledge about vehicles and engines to students so that they are able to keep their vehicles in good condition and so that they can save money. Keeping a check of your car’s health can lead to you saving money so that you don’t have to buy new pistons when you skip your next oil change. Following that, knowing how your engine or vehicle works would help you save money because most of the money people pay to get their cars fixed goes toward the labor cost and not the parts. The field is always growing, so students can easily find a job that they could live comfortably off of with the help of the auto mechanics class. Learning about engines and how your vehicle works is not only for mechanics, but should be required of every student to ensure that they are more financially stable and because it is an important skill to learn today.
