Imprinting through Mentorship by Olivia - August 2023 Scholarship Essay
Service to others has been a personal achievement that provides me with fulfillment and joy daily. Through my Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALs) program I have enjoyed mentoring elementary school students that are at risk of not graduating and are struggling to achieve at their greatest potential. While I began my mentoring role believing I was going to help them, I have truly benefitted the most by learning about myself and what I can contribute to the world around me. I have exemplified love, grit, dedication, commitment, and perseverance with these students as they challenge me in a positive way. When they ask me questions about how I am able to do so much at one time and still be successful, I am vulnerable and share my experiences with regularly overcoming academic challenges, while holding down a part-time job, dancing nearly full time, participating in multiple high school organizations, and actively serving in my church throughout the year.
I view my ability to serve in these capacities as a strength and talent bestowed upon me to bless others. I engage my mentees regularly about not giving up and encouraging them to dream about their future selves. I intentionally and authentically engage them in experiences where they hear me breathe positive and encouraging words into them, while seeking ways to inspire them to be their best selves. We look forward to seeing each other on a weekly basis and as I get to know them better, I work hard to find ways to leave an imprint on them just the way they have imprinted in my my heart.
