I'll Always Need My Best Friend by Olivia - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

I’ve known my best friend Jessa for seven years now. We met when we were both in seventh grade and both new to our school. I had just moved to Wisconsin from Ohio, and Jessa had moved from another town in Wisconsin. Moving is a challenge, especially at a young age. Jessa and I were at a new school in an unfamiliar environment with people we didn’t know; that was until we met each other. The first time I met Jessa was in choir class. We both sat next to each other, and I can’t remember exactly how it happened, but we started talking and discovered we had both just moved to this school. We didn’t know it then, but that was the start of a friendship that’s going to last a lifetime.
After the day we met, Jessa and I talked practically every day in school. We quickly became close and were soon best friends. I knew that she would always be someone I could count on in every aspect of my life including my education. Throughout our time in middle school and high school, Jessa and I ended up being in a lot of classes together. Some of our classes were challenging and some of them were easy and fun. The first challenging class that we took together was AP Psychology in our sophomore year. That class was both of our first AP classes, and it was certainly a challenge. It was a fast-paced palace class with content that took time to understand. I was really passionate about the class and truly enjoyed what I was learning, but I found myself struggling a lot with the class. I was having trouble keeping up with the notes and assignments and understanding some of the material, and a few months into the class I was ready to give up. Even though I loved what I was learning, I was seriously considering dropping the class. I ended up talking to Jessa about it before I made my decision, and I can clearly remember her looking at me and simply saying, “no”.
A resounding no wasn’t what I expected to hear from her, so when I asked her why she said no, Jessa told me I shouldn’t drop the class. Jessa explained that she could tell I really enjoyed the class and that I was passionate about the content and that I shouldn’t give up. That same day I talked to Jessa, she helped me make a plan to figure out how I could improve in the class. We ended up studying together every weekend and Jessa would come with me to ask our teacher for help when I was confused. Jessa supported me in that class for the rest of the year and never let me give up on my education. Our AP psychology class was when I knew that she would always be my number one supporter when it comes to education. Her support has gotten me through many challenging classes and is the reason why I’m continuing to study psychology in college despite my struggle with it in high school. Meeting my best friend Jessa is one of the best things that has happened to me in my life, and I know she’ll always be there for me in every part of my life.
