Talk to Someone by Olivia - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

I'm sure everyone has heard someone say to them, "You never know what someone could be going through." I have heard my peers say this to me my whole life and I never understood why until I was in a situation no one knew about. My family was never really close growing up. I had always known I didn't have the picture perfect family but I acted like I did because all of my friends had the picture perfect families. It wasn't until I had started emotionally maturing that I realized I was growing up in an abusive household. For a while I never had anyone to talk to and I felt so alone. When I would spend the night at a friend's house I would always be upset because they got so much attention that I never got, especially from their fathers. I wanted someone to talk to but I felt like no one would understand me. One day, I built up enough courage to tell one of my closest friends. He was so understanding and opened up to me about the struggles he had growing up. To this day, I have never felt as comfortable and bonded to someone as I do him. If I could go back and talk to someone sooner I would. My advice is to always know you can confide in someone. You are never alone.
