What would your senior yearbook quote be? Discuss what it says about you. by Olivia - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
My senior yearbook quote would be the following, said by Mae Jemison: "Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity."
Jemison, a NASA engineer and astronaut, was the first African-American woman to go to space. Despite all of the hardships she faced due to her race and sex, she fought tirelessly to achieve her goal. For this reason alone would I use the above quote; Jemison is my inspiration as an aspiring female scientist. She has motivated me to go after that I love in spite of the obstacles in my way.
The quote says as much about myself as it does about Mae Jemison. She is a very driven, passionate, and analytical individual. Similarly, I have a strong work ethic and am consistently asking questions in and out of the classroom to expand my learning and ways of thinking. I seek to understand everyone around me, and to compromise with them regardless of differences between us. Additionally, I cannot help but imagine myself after college conducting ground-breaking research in neuroscience and/or biochemistry. My peers tell me that I have a unique way of thinking, and that I always introduce a new idea to the table in projects or class discussions. I have a very inquisitive mind and am always inquiring about the whys and hows of the complex world around me. My strongest qualities of a passionate mind with goals are encompassed in the quote by Mae Jemison.
