Class for the Originals by Olivia - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed and I had to teach an academic subject, I’d choose Creative Writing. Some may argue that Creative Writing does not count as an academic subject, but as someone who took this class in high school, I disagree. This subject tests the mind in a creative range as well as a logical one. I feel that creative writing is a necessary class for those who wish to discover a deeper level of their own mind.
Creative Writing classes are not all about being “creative” or “thinking outside of the box”. For most of the class, you are assigned very specific topics in which you must get a single thought across. Teaching a writing class is not only difficult for the student, but also for the teacher. Although the idea would be to write on a single topic, no two people are the same and that means no two minds are the same. This means that reading each individual’s work is hard to grade solely on the fact that people can write the same thing in different ways. This is also true when it comes to writing more creative pieces.
When it comes to writing, the more individuality in the piece you write, the better. Everybody has a different writing style, whether it is more formal and in depth or more natural and straight to the point. Every piece you write holds a piece of the writer with it. This brings me to my last point.
Writing is a way of expression, just as art and music are. When you pour your soul into writing something, it allows you to have freedom, even if just in that moment. Writing for some people may be the only escape they have in this cruel world we live in. For me, I know writing saved me on some of my harshest days. That is why I love it so much.
That concludes my answer to this prompt. If I were to teach an academic subject, I'd teach Creative Writing because it urges people to be unique, which is, frankly, something this world needs.
