My Teacher Taught Me a New Way of Life by Olivia - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

As my final days as a high school junior where winding down my English teacher decided to end the year with some debates on controversial topics. I was always aware of current social and political issues so I really looked forward to the day when we were able to debate about the Justice System. The initial question was if we believed that it was fair or not. Since so many recent discrimination acts have happened all around the country I firmly stated that the Justice System was not fair to all people. My teacher was one of the only people to agree with me on this topic.
Furthermore, she asked me to stay after class one day and I accepted. There we talked about all different political matters and she shared the inside scoop of why our world is the way it is and why different people believe some things are fair while others are not. She taught me toped my mind and to understand how people think. Although I could not wrap my head around why some people had such outrageous beliefs, she taught me to be more accepting and understanding. Before our conversation I would judge people and be close minded. Now I have gained a new perspective of how to view others and their beliefs. I took what I learned out of the classroom and it has positively impacted my life. My English taught me a new way of life.
