It Won't Get Easier by Olivia - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
Dear Freshman,
I understand what’s going on. You’re tired of writing papers in MLA format. You’re tired of waking up at 7:00 a.m. to go sit in a slightly-slanted brown desk and stare at a whiteboard. You’re tired of nights where you don’t get any sleep because your Biology teacher assigned an overnight lab for you to complete before class the next day. High school is tough and news flash - it isn’t going to get much easier.
But to you, freshman, I advise you to seek the knowledge your teachers are willing to pour into you. They care about you more than you know. A teacher giving you a “C” on a paper can be devastating but when that teacher pulls you aside after class and asks why you got that grade - know that it isn’t because they want to embarrass you. They want you to strive for excellence. They know you can do better.
It is so easy to throw your hands up and yell out “I surrender!” It is so easy to devote only part of your energy to your homework. But dear freshman, don’t let the voices in your head tell you that giving your schoolwork your all isn’t worth it because I assure you it is. The feeling of getting a 100 test grade should be one of the most exhilarating feelings you have. Freshman, go write your paper, wake up at 7:00 a.m., finish your Biology project and impress everyone with your creativity and “smarts”. Even though it won’t get easier, it will get better. I promise.
Sincerely,
The Junior
