Trust by Olabisi - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

“Here you go, write!” Handed a blank piece of paper, my bewildered self would sit and pen with meticulous detail what I wanted, when and how I wanted it in life. I would be sure to kept out every hardship and challenges—even the ones that brought growth in me—because to be honest, who wants pain? Then I would describe in precise detail every accomplishment I wanted and how I expected them. Oh, it's just a dream! Fortunately, I was never handed a piece of paper and asked to pen down my life before I was born. This I consider a great blessing because although I was not given the authority to scribe the details of my life, I know that God is the greatest Author who pens the great stories; and He has scrupulously prepared my story long before I was born. Reflecting on where I am today, through the growth and transitions I have experienced, I have learned an important true and this is the advice I would love to relate to my past self—to trust God with the details of life. This message is profound because it is true and because it is sure to keep me grounded and at ease even in chaos.

One of the passages I love is Philippians 4: 6 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God;” (NKJV). It can be very easy to be preoccupied with how things will turn out and frantically strive to keep everything your way. Nonetheless, this can be a dangerous pursuit, not that you should just sit back and do nothing and hope things turn out well. Rather, that you learn to trust God while you do your part in being diligent—for example study well, be always prepared and make wise decisions—but do all these knowing that God has the final authority. And when things appear to not be going the way you expected, just go back to Him. Knowing He has penned your life long before you were born and His plans are great. Then you will have the peace to keep you grounded and at ease when challenges come. There is no doubt that challenges are a part of life and when handled well they produce growth—so embrace them, trusting God as you face them. Philippians 4: 7 continues with this, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (NKJV) So hear me out—my past self—rest, even when the details are not fully lining up with what you imagined, and trust God with the most minute detail of your life.
