It's What You Make It by Ogechi - August 2013 Scholarship Essay
There are many lessons you can learn in a classroom. One of them can be if you don't pay attention to a certain subject that is being taught, you will regret it when it's time to take a exam on that subject. Another one would be that the teachers can be really "aggy" but thats not because they want to be but it's only because they care. They really do. Out of all the lessons I've learned in a classroom there will always be one that I will take with me till the day that I die. That lesson so happens to be "School is all about what you make it". I learned this shortly after ending my sophmore year and months after heading into my junior year. In 10th grade, I hated biology. I despised it. Nothing about caught my attention. Everytime it was time for me to head to biology I would take my time in the hallways hoping that the class would end quickly. I was wrong. I never paid attention. I would just take the worksheets that the teacher would pass out and just take notes so when an exam was coming up, I'd atleast get a 70% on it. Luckily, I passed. . with a 71 for the school year. During junior year, I realized that not only did I now have to be serious about my work but I also had to learn to like something. After that moment, I started going to class minutes before it started and actually started paying attention and volunteering more than anyone else in that class. I took notes on everything the teacher was saying. We later on recieved our first exam and I was ready for it. After taking it, weeks later everyone got their test back and suprisingly I had a 100% on it. It felt so good. Class then ended and the teacher told me to stay back. We had a conversation and in that conversation he told me how he was so proud of me and pleased with how I changed. Later on that day, I realized that I didn't like the class at first because I wasn't trying but when I did, I was dissapointed with how quick the class would end.
