Power to the Math by Oaklee - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I could be any collage professor I would be a lower level math teacher. My whole life I’ve had a deeply rooted dislike for math. I have had teachers who were very good at math, but they had no clue how to explain something that came so naturally to them. This lead to my experience with math, which has been one of frustration, and very little understanding. From these negative experiences, it has made my dream of becoming a college graduate so much harder to obtain.
I see that there is a large need for lower level math professors who have the ability to teach to the understanding of an individual. Each person (student) is unique and therefore each way a student learns is unique. I know that as a math professor I could make a difference in the lives of students trying to attain their dreams.

The fear of math is real, but there is a way to overcome that fear. With professors who have walked in the same shoes as the students they are now teaching will allow the professor to taylor their lectures to the unique ways that each student learns. Allowing students to achieve higher grades and eventually receive a diploma in a career that they only dreamed of obtaining. I would love to be a college math professor because I feel like I could make a difference in the lives of students who’s shoes I am now walking in.
