My Leap of Faith by Numair - May 2022 Scholarship Essay

The most significant challenge that I have faced would be my parents’ separation. Believe it or not this event had caused a chain reaction to my overall mentality and academics. I believe that I suffered and lost any sort of aspect that I had of my future. Covid-19 coincided with the separation. Life dealt me a double blow that almost did me in. Sinking was out of the question, so I swam for dear life. High school years can provide the groundwork for a stable future. My circumstances forced me to grow up fast and take my future seriously.

I have to admit, forcing myself to do this was difficult and my grades suffered as well. However, rather than letting my family life weigh me down, I got back up and found strength in extracurricular activities. These included water polo and intermediate theater, both which not only strengthened my self-confidence, but also gave me the courage I needed to keep going.

While the pandemic kept me away from the stage, it did allow me to focus more on my studies and improve my grades. Isolation was necessary to stop the spread, so rather than lamenting the cards life had dealt me, I focused on winning the game another way. In other words, I started to focus on the silver lining rather than the dark clouds that I thought were obscuring my future. I am proud to say that today I stand as a self-confident individual who can take anything life throws at him without going down for the count. Not only did I excel in classes that I was doing poorly in, I have developed a mindset and self-esteem that doesn't waver in the face of challenges.

I plan to explore the vast medical field and become a prestigious Neurosurgeon. I want to save lives for a living and have a name for myself. I want to look back at the hurdles I surpassed and compare my life to my destined future. When I become a doctor one day, I will look at myself in a mirror. I will briefly state to myself, “I want to do it, I will do it, and I have done it”.
