Self-discovery by Noemi - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The one word I choose to describe why I wish to attend college is self-discovery because one’s own purpose in life is discovered. One of the purposes of college is to furtherly explore one’s passions and use the interest in those passions to form a career that’s not only enjoyable, but is also beneficial to society. College would allow me to learn about what makes up my character in depth. That is, I would be learning about what makes me who I am and how I would be able to use those traits to contribute to the world. A person confident in their abilities is more likely to contribute to the world for the helping of others; college would give me the opportunity to become secure of my skills and be selfless when it comes to using them to help others. I’m planning on pursuing a career in the medical field so if I discovered that I am really good at communicating with others sympathetically, then by the time I were to decide my major I would be sure of the path I have chosen (based off of the learnings of my capabilities, aspirations, and overall goals for the future). This would be beneficial in the long run not only because of financial issues, but also because I would be content with my future job. All throughout college, I would visualize myself in this job to give me inspiration and maintain my motivation to reach my goals. This image would be helpful when my optimism would slightly decrease as a result of rigorous classes. Once I overcome one educational obstacle, I would start to believe more in my own workings, and put as much effort and time into being successful. In college, what would also keep me going is my surrounding environment. If I was struggling, I would know that I wasn’t the only one facing difficulty on an educational journey. Nevertheless, I would surround myself with people or hobbies that keep my determination levels high. Those people can be classmates and the hobbies can be clubs and organizations that a college gives me the chance to participate in. It’s those kinds of things that would help me figure out my real purpose in life, as I am more than just a grade. I would stop being my worst enemy and start venturing out into the world with my strengths well recognized.
