The Benefits of Studying Abroad by Noemi - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

More time spent indoors watching the hours tick by whilst chewing my fingernails aggressively, spending hours trying to complete work rather failing, acquiring major headaches from re-looking at work that wasn't turned in due to a lack of self confidence and an increased amount of self doubt. These are only some negative effects resulting from students experiencing boredom from attending a college close to their hometown. If I could study abroad, my college education would be positively impacted in the way that I would have an opportunity to grow as an individual in a fresh new learning environment , and I would be more up to learning more about myself.

To commence, studying abroad would help my college education positively in the way that I would have more chances to develop more essential-to-life-skills as an individual due to my exposure to a new learning environment. First of all, it's likely that I would develop better communication skills as a result of having to interact with others, whether the reason be as complex as to make new friendships or to be as simple as asking for directions. This would allow my social skills to improve drastically which could be beneficial in the long run in jobs and life in general. The level of emotional intelligence I possess would also increase as a result of having more experience with communicating with others. I would know more about how to balance my finance, since I would have to make sure I had enough money to support myself (with food, clothing and housing, for example). If I made a mistake and realized that I had spent too much money on one aspect of my life (like luxuries), I could aim to fix it the next time by not repeating the same action and learning how to balance my life more.

Furthermore, studying abroad for my college education would be beneficial in the way that I'd be more willing to learn more about myself, which is always important for mental well-being. Commonly, students label their mental well-being as insignificant though they don't realize that that's what reflects their physical and spiritual wellness. By studying in a new place, I'd have the ability to explore different parts of a city, which would likely prevent accumulated stress, ensuring that my mental sanity is safe. I would spend less time indoors, potentially having mental breakdowns or counting down the amount of things I did wrong during the week. If I went to a college in my small community, I would likely not willingly be more outgoing since I'd already feel like I had experienced moments with those places, so they had lost their specialness and meaning to me. By forcing myself to go out more, I would also learn some valuable time management skills since I would be looking after my education while at the same time making sure my mental health isn't going downhill.

Overall, studying abroad would be beneficial to my education because I'd have more space to grow as an individual, and I would be more willing to learn about myself, which would ensure that all of the aspects of my life would be fulfilled.
