Dinner with Thomas Jefferson by Noemi - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

I would have the pleasure of having dinner with Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Thomas Jefferson is a man with many accomplishments outside and during his presidency for his intelligence. Outside of his position, he is most known for his brilliance in literature and inventions. From Jefferson's passion for gadgets, he was able to become a scientific leader for America. I find it fascinating, and I wonder if Jefferson pursued science because he wanted better for America or wanted to develop creativity and form originality through his designs. Either or, I admire his intellectual strive for he made a name for himself in his inventions; moreover, for drafting the Declaration of Independence.
To end the American Revolutionary War, Thomas Jefferson, with the help of a few others, wrote the “Declaration of Independence.” The document states the importance of individual rights and freedom for thirteen colonies. I respect his claim to free citizens from British rule and for the citizens choose what they are willing to commit and provide to the government rather than being forced. In the dinner, I want to converse about the success of the American Revolutionary War and listen carefully to Jefferson's thoughts and experience. Moreover, out of curiosity, I would ask if Jefferson had endured inner turmoils when he was elected president after the war.
During his time of presidency, Jefferson's public success is purchasing the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. The new territory had more than 820,000 square miles of land, an excellent trading facility, and effectively doubled the size of the United States. I appreciate Jefferson’s acceptance of buying the whole Louisiana Territory when he originally only meant to purchase New Orleans for the trading facility. Nonetheless, the purchase affected America remarkably with American expansion, which began immediately westward into the new lands.
Overall, these reasons spark my interest into having dinner and engage a conversation with the third political leader of America.
