Do not fear the "and, ifs, or buts" by Noemi - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Do Not Fear the “and, ifs, and buts”
There has always been the “if, how, what, and whys?” in the sea of thoughts of a busy college student’s life. These questions possess a great potential to create fear and disaster to a student to reach their goals and dreams. This is why I truly want to become a college professor. First, I need to find a job as a professor at a university. Second, develop a clear rhetoric for learning objectives for students. Finally, find the potential of each student I meet to give them the tools and all available resources to not find the “if’s” but how. All this will be learned on my journey before I become a professor. This is my first essay in my path to win a scholarship to become a college professor.
I am looking to gain an education in painting and drawing with a minor in art history. I would broaden my knowledge so that I can teach a variety of different classes such as figure drawing/painting, painting (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), illustration, cartooning, perspective drawing and rendering, art history including but not limited to renaissance to modern, impressionism to modern art, and business in art. Outside of my college work I have been professionally involved with the art industry for over 12 years. I feel that it is my purpose to give back to the community after what other artists have generously taught me.
I started drawing as a child as a result of my mother having cancer and art became my babysitter. Certain life experiences that help build an artist or the creativity mind in a person can be a gift and finding that talent within that person is what is important about being an art college professor. Professors are there to guide the student to a successful path. The path I took was a difficult, and fought with blood, sweat, and tears.
After high school, I became a Disney artist drawing caricatures and portraits. I drew thousands of faces, and picked up different art techniques by the collective of other graduate art students. later that year I was hired and recruited into their world class entertainment department. After 5 years, I quit to travel abroad to Italy and other countries to study art. I managed to engrave what sort of skills and techniques I gained overseas to bring back to the US. Moving back to the US opened my possibilities to a variety of different art jobs yet I wanted to explore into the unknown and the underground world of body art (the taboo art form). I became a professional tattoo artist and painter for 11 years. Doing various art shows and working long hours in a tattoo shop allowed me to learn how to become an independent and freelance self-employed artist. Teaching students how to be independent would be the best route because they have options to rely on themselves and have a sense of pride, confidence, and freedom to build their own paths instead of choosing one.
Being a college professor would mean teaching to adolescent to the second or third age adults. Ideally, the deeper understanding I have gained in my life would be easier to teach to an adult rather than say a young child. I want to prepare students for a career path and use all my energies in helping them to become successful. Currently I am planning to invest into an education at the School of Art in Chicago. I feel a need to go here inspired by their notable alumni such as Walt Disney and Orson Wells, their college aptitude about student life, and the affordability to live in Chicago. The most important life lesson I want to give as a college professor that can be taught in any class is that you cannot put a price tag on education, but rather be driven by your success through determination, and do not fear the “and, ifs, or but’s”. I plan to return from Chicago with a master’s degree and with the possibility of a PhD. Eventually, I would like to teach in a southern California university near my hometown to build my own home and family.
