The Impact of Tutoring and Educational Assistance by Noelle - April 2019 Scholarship Essay

The impact that tutoring and educational assistance has made on me has been significant both academically and personally. From going to home school, to private school, to a public high school was a big challenge for me academically but I’ve learned so many useful skills for my future. Perhaps the most important way that I have grown academically is in my math skills. Math has always been a huge struggle for me and I was terrified coming into public school because I was worried about the pace of the math classes. From my freshman year to now at the end of my senior year I have grown immensely in my math ability. This is because I was able to receive all the help I needed to keep up in class. I am a very slow learner when it comes to math, so even if I wasn’t understanding a lesson, I knew I could receive the tutoring that I needed at any time of the day. I’ve spent countless hours with the math tutors at KWHS and they have helped me finally understand parts of a subject that I never thought I could. This has made me literally overjoyed. I am very pleased with the progress I’ve made in math throughout my time in high school. I know that personally this has been a result of my own commitment and hard work but I am also so grateful for the assistance I have received.

Two other important skills that I have grown in are critical thinking and communication skills. The ability to talk with classmates and analyze information and form solutions are abilities that I can take into my future for my profession and they are also one’s that will enhance my personal relationships. I have learned to collaborate with others and many different kinds of people and I have been able to expand the ways I evaluate and resolve study topics within a classroom and communicate with others to gain more insight for class work. I’m a very social person and the classwork and classroom situations that the teachers have provided for me have been able to nurture and improve my natural trait of being able to talk to people and have encouraged that natural ability in the direction of being effective and efficient. Throughout my time at Kelly Walsh I’ve also had to step out of my comfort zone and do public speaking on many occasions. Before I went to public high school, I had only given speeches in front of very small crowds and for short amounts of time. I used to be very scared and nervous while giving speeches. During my time at KWHS, I have become a better public speaker. I have learned to adapt to circumstances and the audience I am dealing with. Public speaking skills that I have learned in high school have better prepared me to express myself clearly but also kindly. I have developed immeasurably in my confidence to speak in front of people from my freshman year to my senior year. Recently, I gave a speech in front of 300 people at a youth conference and received affirmation from both youth and adults who attended the conference. As I have matured over the last four years, I have also become more appreciative for the skills I have learned.
