How Engineering Has Impacted my Life by Noah - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have a major interest in a wide variety of science and math related subjects. Out of these subjects I would have to say that engineering was the one that sparked my intellectual curiosity and passion for learning. It combines many of the subjects that I enjoy learning about and focuses them towards solving real world problems. Engineering even inspired me to take as many STEM electives as humanly possible during my time in high school. I also enjoy how challenging engineering problems can be as they allow me to think outside the box. The engineering process is also quite enjoyable to learn as it is quite a general process that can be applied to problems that have nothing to do with engineering. My interest in engineering continues to play a major part in my academic pursuits and goals, and has inspired me to learn about other subjects that relate to STEM.
A major way in which engineering has had a major influence on my academic pursuits was through my choice of major. When the time came for me to choose a major I obviously knew that it would be in engineering, but the main question that I had was, “what branch of engineering do I want to major in?” This is where my experience with engineering at the time comes into play. To determine the right engineering major for me, I simply read the descriptions of each major and determined how well the description lined up with what my specific interests in engineering were. After much searching, my experience with engineering influenced me to choose a major in mechanical engineering. After choosing my major, the engineering experience that I gained during the first semester of my freshman year of college influenced me to pick a track for my major that would allow me to combine mechanical engineering with electrical engineering and computer science.
This academic pursuit has played a major role in the goals that I set for myself. One such goal influenced by this pursuit is gaining a complete understanding of how to utilize the engineering process. I am currently pursuing this goal by creating personal projects for myself that require the usage of the entire engineering process. Besides personal projects, I have recently developed my understanding of this process through coursework and I plan to develop my understanding of this process in future courses as that will allow me to get direct feedback from my professors on how I could better utilize the process. This goal will allow me to develop better tools for idea generation as well as allow me to determine what criteria I should judge ideas by. I plan to achieve this goal on or before the day that I graduate college. This goal is by far my most important for me to achieve as I will utilize the engineering process for the rest of my life.
Finally, my interest in engineering has not only indirectly influenced my goals. Engineering has also directly influenced my goals by pointing me towards the career field that I would like to enter. Many of my goals have been developed solely because of my interest in engineering rather than how they relate to my academics. One such goal that I have set for myself is to learn how to use SOLIDWORKS Simulation to run studies on the designs for my ideas so that I may gain an understanding of how they will respond to the problem that they were designed to solve. I plan to achieve this goal by utilizing SOLIDWORKS Simulation text books to provide me with everything I need to know about how to use these tools. I plan to complete this goal by the twelfth of February. I will use the skills that I gain through the completion of this goal to run important tests on designs in my future career.
In conclusion, engineering has had a major influence on my academic pursuits and goals. My experience with engineering allowed me to determine the school that I wanted to attend and the major that I wanted to work towards. Engineering has a major influence on the goals that I have currently set for myself and it will continue to have an influence on any future goals that I plan to pursue. All in all, These are the ways in which engineering has sparked my curiosity and passion for learning as well as how it has influenced the goals that I set for myself.
