College is seen as one of the most influential periods of life, and it can set you up for future success. Choosing a major is the first step in being successful in college and I have chosen to major in kinesiology. Kinesiology is the science of how the human body moves, and how that movement can better our lives. Kinesiology majors can wind up in a multitude of different careers, including physical therapists, personal trainers, or as an athletic trainer. But kinesiology’s appeal to me comes from my love for the sport of baseball.

Baseball is a sport that requires lots of attention to detail. Baseball is a lot less about someone's brute strength-although it helps to be strong-and is more about being able to adapt to changes and organize your body to best manage these changes. The best pitchers in baseball are not the biggest guys on the field, but the efficiency of their mechanics is unmatched by other position players. This mechanical efficiency allows elite pitchers to throw a five-ounce ball upwards of 90 miles per hour, with some major league pitchers touching 100 miles per hour. Being able to throw a baseball this hard for prolonged periods of time takes lots of hard work and determination, but no matter how hard you work if you are not in a beneficial position to throw you will not reach these velocities. That is where pitching coaches come into play. Pitching coaches can take an average pitcher to the next level, by finding the holes in their delivery and patching them with advice and drills. This is where being a kinesiology major is especially important.

The reason I will major in kinesiology is so that I can one day be a pitching coach at the college or professional level. The study of how the body moves will allow me to teach others the best ways to arrange and orchestrate their body to reach their peak explosiveness and capability while pitching. This profession allows be to be near the sport I love, while also helping others to enjoy the sport and be the best player that they possibly can. Kinesiology can also show me not just how to move more productively in an athletic sense, but I can also apply some concepts to my everyday life to better my overall health and wellbeing. Overall, I believe the best route that I can take is to major in kinesiology because it interests me and opens a path for me to stay near the game that I love.
