Soft skills are a significant part of everyone's lives, but which ones are the most impactful? Many people think that overall communication is all you need for success, but there are many other factors to succeeding than just communicative skills. What about teamwork, or empathy? Or perhaps time management may be the most beneficial? All in all, most soft skills are more valuable than they're given credit for.
First of all, what are soft skills? Soft skills are traits and qualities that affect performance with others. Soft skills can include things such as creative thinking abilities, networking abilities, or conflict resolution skills. In my opinion, the most important of these skills is adaptability. Adaptation is one of the most essential skills in any situation.
Adapting isn't just something we as people use in social or group situations, even animals in the wild need it. Adaptation is the ability to change and form around situations and obstacles, rather than succumbing to them. Take for example, if you were in a group project for a coding class, and the coding program encountered a bug in the system. Adapting comes into play in this case when the group tries to work around the issue at hand, rather than letting it ruin the entire project and forcing you to restart. Many issues can simply be avoided when you learn to adapt.
But what about negotiation, another very crucial soft skill? Negotiation allows you to compromise with others, and let everyone get what they want. Doesn't negotiation with others also solve many problems on its own, especially when combined with other soft skills in the workplace? And let's not forget your work ethic. You simply cannot have a job well done if you do it without any sort of ethics involved.
All in all, despite many other soft skills being very important, I still think that adaptation is the most essential one. It allows you to overcome most situations without having to go back to square one. It also allows for good teamwork exercise and amazing critical thinking to take place.
