Teaching the Elderly by Noah - March 2022 Scholarship Essay
My grandmother was born in the 1950s in New Jersey to a poor family. She had a good childhood, her parents loved, had good friends, and had possessions. However, they weren't wealthy enough to afford any of the new and upcoming electronics. They had an older tv and an out-of-date car. Since my grandma didn't grow up with electronics and phones, she didn't know how to apply it to her education. This also caused almost a hatred towards technology since it just complicated things more than helped. Nowadays, she gets easily upset when dealing with electronics and isn’t open to learning how to use them. This has caused me to have to adapt to all types of technology and learn how to use them and apply them.
I learn best when I can teach the material to someone else or talk it out to review it. So once I write my notes on my laptop using my stylus, I can then present it just like the teacher to an open room or my parents to help me study for a test. I have to teach my grandma how to adapt and learn the technology by showing her just like how I would study.
Having all my notes written on my laptop is a huge advantage in school. I will never lose my notes and jeopardize my chances on an assessment. I can also draw out diagrams and math problems and not worry about running out of space so my attention can be fully devoted to learning the subject. However, while the advantages shine, the disadvantages are there as well. Since electronic devices are used for a multitude of different purposes you can be easily distracted by almost everything on the internet. Another disadvantage is unlike paper and a notebook the electronic device can die and then you have to wait for it to charge.
In conclusion the advantages of electronic devices are apparent in today’s society as they are a necessity to live and the older generations had a much harder time learning since of the lack of resources at their disposal.
