Volunteerism by Noah - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

By: Noah Schaeffer
Throughout my life, I have learned to do things not just to benefit myself but to benefit the community and those around me. Through being a part of National Honor Society (NHS) I have had the opportunity to volunteer for the betterment of the community. Although, looking at a bigger picture, these are small events and activities, it still counts for something that is much bigger and has led to me understanding why we do things such as volunteering. To me, volunteering isn’t just something you do to complete requirements for a program, like that of NHS, but instead a way to demonstrate citizenship for the common good of the community. It has given me the opportunity to be an even bigger part of the West Fargo community. And not just being a part of it but contributing and making a difference. Doing things for others with nothing expected in return helps me feel like I am making a difference.
Over the past two years of being a part of NHS I have been able to volunteer with a few different programs. These consist of the park board events, local Kiwanis gift wrapping, children’s leader at my church, Fill the Dome, and the elementary book fairs. Being a part of these events over the past two years of high school has contributed to making me a well-rounded citizen while giving back to our community at the same time. Alongside NHS, I have also volunteered with Team Boaz which allows me to impact the new Americans of the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Area. With Team Boaz, we fix donated bikes and at the end of spring we can give these bikes away as a gift to them so that they can be mobile if they have no other resources of transportation. Being involved in these programs has given me the opportunity to show who I am and help give the local community a good name.
